Navpad Ki Oli: A Journey of Devotion, Discipline, and Liberation | Nikhil Pattani
Navpad Ki Oli is a significant Jain festival that is observed twice a year, once in the Chaitra (March-April) and again in Ashwin (September-October). This festival lasts for nine days and involves deep spiritual practice, including fasting, meditation, and the worship of nine divine elements known as the Navpad. Each day is dedicated to the worship and reflection on one of these nine spiritual entities, which are considered essential to attain liberation (Moksha).
Here are the 9 pads (divine elements) that are worshipped during the Navpad Oli:
1. Arihant – The enlightened souls who have conquered inner enemies like anger, greed, ego, etc., and are still alive, guiding others on the path to liberation.
2. Siddha – The liberated souls who have attained Nirvana, free from the cycle of birth and death.
3. Acharya – The spiritual leaders or monks who guide others in practicing Jain teachings and maintaining the religious order.
4. Upadhyaya – The spiritual teachers who provide knowledge of the scriptures and help others progress on the spiritual path.
5. Sadhu – The ascetics or monks who renounce worldly pleasures and dedicate their lives to spiritual advancement.
6. Darshan – True vision or faith, which is essential to understanding the Jain path and its truths.
7. Gyaan – Knowledge, especially of the scriptures and the nature of the soul and the universe.
8. Charitra – The conduct or character that involves adhering to the five major vows: non-violence, truth, non-stealing, celibacy, and non-possession.
9. Tapa – Austerity or self-discipline, including fasting and other forms of renunciation that purify the soul.
During Navpad Oli, devotees typically perform a special kind of fasting called Ayambil, where only simple, tasteless food (without spices, milk, or sugar) is consumed once a day. The goal of the fasting and worship is to purify oneself, deepen spiritual understanding, and move closer to liberation.
Each day of Oli is dedicated to worshiping one of these pads, with prayers and rituals that focus on the virtues associated with that specific pad. The festival is considered as important, if not more, than Paryushan, and it is a time of heightened spiritual practice and reflection.
