Open Letter to Real Estate Professionals on International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women | By Nikhil Pattani
Dear colleagues,
On this International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women, let us take a moment to reflect on the crucial role that real estate companies can play in promoting a safe and secure working environment for all employees. As an industry, we have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the eradication of sexual harassment in the workplace by regulating and educating our workforce about the Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act and the Vishaka Guidelines.
Real estate companies can make a significant impact by implementing policies and procedures that explicitly address sexual harassment and ensure that no employee, regardless of gender, feels unsafe or marginalized. By creating a comprehensive sexual harassment policy and actively enforcing it, we can create an environment where everyone feels respected and valued.
Furthermore, educating our employees about the different forms of sexual harassment, its consequences, and appropriate behavior will increase awareness and empower individuals to speak out against any wrongdoing. Promoting a culture of zero tolerance towards sexual harassment sends a strong message that such behaviors will not be tolerated within our organization.
In line with the Vishaka Guidelines, our companies can establish Internal Complaints Committees that provide a safe platform for reporting incidents of sexual harassment. These committees should be trained to handle complaints sensitively, keeping the victim's confidentiality in mind and ensuring a thorough investigation is conducted. By empowering employees to come forward without fear of retaliation, we can create an environment where victims feel supported and perpetrators are held accountable.
Let us seize this opportunity to contribute towards a society free from violence and discrimination. Together, we can make a difference by regulating and educating about sexual harassment at the workplace, aligning with the Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act and the Vishaka Guidelines. By taking these steps, we can ensure that our company serves as a beacon of safety, equality, and respect for all, fostering a workplace where every employee can thrive.
Sincerely,
